Living With Art

Have you ever been tapped on the shoulder by a piece of art that insisted, “take me home!”  Have you peered inside an art gallery window, but felt too shy to go inside? Years later, have you regretted you didn’t buy a painting or drawing when you finally had the perfect place for it?

These unrequited art stories are more common than you’d expect, which is exactly why I’m giving you the permission to buy art whenever it finds you. Impetuous as it might seem - don’t worry! If you’re like me, and love art, it will always find its’ proper place and space in your life.

For some, art enters the design at the end of a project along with accessories and throw pillows. However, there is another way! Why not start with art? Why not bring it in from the very beginning and allow it to be your source of inspiration? A special piece of art can guide the journey of design for an entire room. It can help in coordinating fabrics and color selections, even influence lighting and floor plans.

Think about the art in your home as the main story taking center stage. It’s bringing spaces to life, telling stories, reminding you of people you’ve known and places you’ve been or dream of.  Art adds beauty and intrigue to any space along with color, texture and form. Sometimes you love it for reasons you can’t even express.

Art from any era or style can be part of a streamlined modern design aesthetic. Art completes a room and leaves you fulfilled. When art is a focal point, it often means you can skip over those unnecessary knick-knacks that only take up shelf space. What’s not to love about great design with fewer items to dust and straighten?!

Sounds all wonderful, right? —But if you’re not confident about your taste in art, where do you begin? How will you know you’re making the right investment? These are the issues and questions that can get in the way of living with art and leveraging it for design. The most important thing in all of this is to know you’re not alone!

Working with an interior designer can make the process of integrating art into your home a breeze. We are with you every step of the way; curating, framing, installing and illuminating it to be sure it has the honor and respect it deserves. What matters about art for your home is that it’s something that delights you. Your relationship with it is ultimately more important than someone else’s standards of beauty or value.

So, I’ll leave you with this:

Start somewhere — say “YES!” and buy art when it finds you. Don’t wait for the perfect room or bare wall to justify it. Go to museums, galleries and art shows. Go ahead, have opinions about what you like. Gradually, become your own connoisseur of the art you love. Your collection will grow. Your art will provide essential character and add a deeply personal joie de vivre to your home.

It’s no secret that art plays a leading role in Artistry Interior Design. Helping clients incorporate more art in their lives brings me ultimate joy. If you’re an art lover or just stepping into this wonderful world of living with art, allow me to help you answer that tap on your shoulder.
